Friends of John Marshall Magnet

Parents Supporting Teachers, Staff and Students

Oct. 25, 2012 Meeting Minutes

Here’s a quick summary of our last meeting on October 25 and a preview of our upcoming meeting on December 6.

(1)   Separate non-profit status: The question was whether or not to set up a 501c organization and open a bank account or use the school’s non-profit status and the account that already exists for the magnet through the student store. For reasons of cost ($400-$800 to set up a 501c), administrative ease (501cs require annual filings), and transparency, we decided not to set up a non-profit with a separate bank account at this time.

(2)   Friends of Marshall Magnet Mission Statement and Officer’s Duties: Tanya Peacock agreed to put together draft documents based on examples from Friends of Marshall SAS. Copies of the drafts will be available for review and comment at the December 6 meeting.

(3)    Community Building: Several parents expressed a need to meet and connect with other magnet parents and families. We discussed various ideas and decided that a potluck at the next scheduled magnet meeting (Dec 6) would be a good start. Please see Andrew Thomas’ 11/29 email for information about what to bring.

(4)   Communications: Andrew Thomas agreed to develop a website to facilitate communication between teachers, parents and students. He will be previewing a beta version at the Dec 6 meeting.
