Andrew discussed establishing the FOJMM 501(c)(3) status.  Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws have been filed with the State.  We are waiting to receive an IEN so we can then open a checking account.  An account will be established at the Gas Company’s credit union, New Vision.  Filing the federal 501(c)(3) forms can be a lengthy process; however, parent Ellen Rosen counseled that the organization can hold out as a non-profit while the status is pending.

1.  It was moved by Andrew Thomas, seconded by Ellen Rosen that the following FOJMM parents would serve as Officers of the non-profit 501(c)(3):

Andrew Thomas – President
Lisa Dosch – Secretary
Chris Nichelson – Treasurer

Andrew Thomas reported that sufficient funds were raised by the parent body to cover Ms. Rhee’s field trip.  The school covered a small outstanding balance of $50.

Pat Jeffries, Magnet Coordinator, announced there will be an informational Magnet Meeting on November 21, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.   The meeting will cover A-G requirements (UC/Cal State graduation requirements).  In early January, Ms. Ryan, the college counselor, will meet with 11th and 12th grade students regarding their schedules, graduation requirements and AP classes.

Andrew discussed a “Fund Drive.”  Last year a request was mailed to families and we raised approximately $3,000.  It was suggested that FOJMM model a solicitation letter similar to that used at King Junior High School.  The goal is to mail out letters before Thanksgiving.

Andrew suggested that FOJMM plan a Teacher Appreciation Day in March 2014.

Andrew requested assistance in updating the FOJMM website and bi-weekly newsletter.  Mr. Jeffries announced that a list of the school’s clubs is online.

A parent inquired about the problem of marijuana smoking on campus.  Mr. Jeffries agreed that it is a serious problem for Marshall, and many other California schools.  The issuance of medical marijuana cards hasn’t helped to combat the situation. Interested parents should contact Ms. Lee Ramirez or John Horta to discuss volunteer opportunities for a “Parent Patrol.”

Finals will be held on December 17, 18 and 19.

FOJMM has approximately 103 emails for Magnet families out of approximately 400.  It was suggested that we include a request to provide FOJMM with emails in the Fund Drive solicitation letter.

A parent suggested that teachers be encouraged to setup their own Amazon accounts and create “wish lists” so parents could help fulfill their classroom needs.

Mr. Jeffries stated that if the FOJMM parent body wants to pursue encouraging teachers to use an online grading method, it would be best to do so before the next semester.  Most teachers that use a web-based grading program are using Engrade, https://www.engrade.com/

2.  It was moved by Ellen Rosen, and seconded by Andrew Thomas that the meeting adjourn at 8:05 a.m.
