College Path LA is currently engaged in “Job Shadowing” wherein the students shadow a professional working in their career interest.

One idea is for teachers this year to create Amazon.com “wish lists” wherein parents and supporters will be encouraged to purchase items off their wish lists.

Parent Chris Nichelson volunteered to investigate the advantages of establishing FOJMM as either a PTA versus 501(c)(3).

All parents present were asked to provide their emails.

A Picnic was proposed for Saturday, September 7th.  Parents raised concerns that it was too close and more preparation was needed.  A new date will be announced.  Volunteers will be needed for setup, clean up, decorations and activities/games.   Having the picnic be parent only versus families is still under discussion.

MAGNET COORDINATOR REPORT

Mr. Patrick Jeffries reported on the following:

Within the next year, LAUSD will be mandating that all teachers use an e-gradebook system.  Systems that have been used by the teachers include Jupiter Grades, Engrade and EasyGradePro.

The percent of students qualifying for the free and reduced lunch program dropped from 75% to 60% this school year (Title I).  In order to qualify for the Title I funds, at least 65% of the families must be low income.  The result is a loss of funds in the $100,000s.  These funds helped pay for three teachers, a counselor and AP tests.  Mr. Jeffries encouraged everyone who qualifies to fill out the online form located on the school’s website, Meal Application.

The PSAT is on October 16.  Study guides were handed out in English classes.  10th grade students take the test at no charge.  There is limited space for 11th and 9th graders.  Students must register online.  The application is located on the College Center’s Facebook page, PSAT Application.

A list of college center events was distributed.

The newly hired Magnet teachers will be invited to the next parent body meeting.

Mr. Jeffries will be posting a monthly Magnet Newsletter on the John Marshall Website.

Soon the school’s clubs and sporting activities will be posted online.

All Magnet students received an Academic Planner.  Funds were used from last year’s donation drive.

IMPORTANT DATES

Back to School is on September 12

School ID photos will be offered September 18-20.

The FOJMM will setup a table at Back to School to hand out Information Cards to the parents in order to collect contact info on parents.  The Magnet Club students will help oversee the table.  Parent Samantha Follows also volunteered to assist manning the table.

11th graders will have an opportunity to participate in a service project, Ciclavia

TEACHER REQUESTS

Social Studies teacher, Ms. Rhee, submitted a request for funds.  She would like to take 60 AP European History students to LACMA on November 12, 2013.  A bus has been secured, but she needs $400 for a substitute teacher and parent volunteers.

AP English teacher (?) requested funds for supplemental books

MAGNET CLUB

Magnet Club President Mikayla O’Bryan and Molly Simon discussed Magnet Club activities.  Currently the Club is made up of about 8 members.  They meet at lunch on Thursdays; however, the club conflicts with other school clubs, so the day may be changed.  They have met with Ms. Phillips who helped establish the Job Shadowing program.

The Club identified wish list items including: field trips, SAT preparation classes, and books

With the use of the Digital Media department, the students will be designing a T-shirt and selling them as a fundraiser.
